Despite his heavy involvement with the civil rights movement, Rustin was criticized for being openly gay. He advised many civil rights leaders behind the scenes.
MAYA ANGELOU 📚
Maya Angelou was a poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist born in St. Louis, Missouri. She’s published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry.
Her most famous work I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) tells her life story up to age 17, and illustrates how literature helped Maya overcome racism and trauma. It’s widely used in schools and universities worldwide (despite many attempts to ban it). #blackhistorymonth
(Side note: This portrait was so hard! most pictures of her are in black and white, and while most of them suggest she had brown/black hair, I see most people depicting her with blonde hair in the image I’m referencing. Lol, the joys of portrait work!) #blackhistorymonth #kidlit
BAYARD RUSTIN 📞🪧
Bayard Rustin was a political activist for civil rights, socialism, non violence, and gay rights. He’s best known as the organizer for the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
