We are @amnesty.org European Institutions Office! We advocate towards the EU & Council of Europe for human rights for all.
Amnesty EU
As @zasultani.bsky.social shared today at the
@europarl.europa.eu: returning people to Afghanistan ignores the grave repression of human rights in the country, the deepening humanitarian crisis, and the reasons why people fled in the first place.
Head of delegation Engin Eroglu MEP and others should show their commitment to the universality & indivisibility of human rights and engage counterparts on China’s serious human rights violations, calling for:
👉The immediate & unconditional release of detained rights defenders
(2/4)
👉The repeal of the new "Ethnic Unity Law" which violates rights of Tibetans, Uyghurs and other groups in China & risks being applied to restrict rights abroad
👉Independent, international investigations into possible Chinese government crimes against humanity
(3/4)
The EU should
👉Press the Cambodian government to prioritise protection of victims of human trafficking & conduct thorough, effective investigation into scamming compounds
👉Support & fund shelters & civil society organizations working on this issue & supporting the victims
As the @ec.europa.eu gets ready to host the Taliban in Brussels to discuss the return of Afghans, @amnesty.org urgently reiterates that Afghanistan is not a safe country for returns and calls on states to uphold their international obligations. www.amnesty.org/en/latest/ne...
Pressure from the international community was likely a primary driver in the Cambodian government initiating this crackdown, but @amnesty.org finds the task is nowhere near complete.
International pressure must be redoubled, while more funding is needed to support survivors. (2/3)
Amnesty’s Afghanistan researcher
@zasultani.bsky.social is in Brussels to meet with Belgian authorities and EU institutions, alongside @hrw.org's
@fereshtaabbasi.bsky.social and @theecre.bsky.social, to highlight the grave risks and persecution that people returned to Afghanistan would face 🧵
New @amnesty.org report on how the Cambodian government’s high-profile crackdown on scamming compounds has failed to dismantle the majority of sites in the country, protect 1000s subjected to human trafficking, torture & slavery & hold perpetrators to account. (1/3) www.amnesty.org/en/latest/ne...
Members of @europarl.europa.eu should do in Beijing what they have done in Brussels: show that Europe stands with those who stand on the side of human rights.
We’re watching.

Members of @europarl.europa.eu travel to China soon. Before they go, @amnesty.org & 6 other orgs have urged them to insist human rights be a part of their discussions🧵
