While much of Marin County is preserved parkland, there are plenty of places for new housing in existing downtowns, which still have many parking lots. Marin's housing shortage becomes the East Bay's problem as well - they need to do their part!

San Rafael is the only city is Marin that has seen significant development proposals actually pencil, in part because of the downtown's form-based code, which has no density limit. Sites are being cleared and cranes are going up. So guess what the city is doing... www.marinij.com/2026/06/14/s...

Over the past five years, the city has received 18 applications for major residential complexes. Seventeen used state density bonus law to allow more dwellings.
