But then this boisterous locomotive of a film unspooled before us and dropped our jaws. Nobody, I mean nobody thought some '30s serial throwback could work like this. But there was an icon being born right before our eyes.
We were tense, we were scared, we were thrilled, we were laughing. Shooting the swordsman brought the house down. And we walked out bouncing to the next classic John Williams march.
In an era of teasers and trailers and teasers for trailers, I don't think we can really be surprised like that anymore. And that joy of discovery is a large part of what burned Raiders into my brain on that Saturday morning in 1981.
People trying to make Disclosure Day reconcile with Close Encounters are I think doing both films a disservice. Different films from different times by a director at different stages of his life. Let them both be their own thing.

Disclosure Day put in mind to revisit this, which is a much more comparable film than Close Encounters.
Raiders of the Lost Ark opened 45 years ago yesterday, but 45 years ago today is when I first saw it. I remember having no idea what was coming. I don't think I was 100% sure it wasn't going to be about Noah's ark.
