A related thought: it is so incredibly baffling to me that Disney went all-in on remaking Renaissance-era musicals instead of…you know, making a ton of new ones. (Hell, they could’ve done both.)

I think the bigger shift in animated movies from like 30 years ago to now isn’t the format shifting from hand-drawn to CG but the stories shifting from musical to (mostly) non-musical. All the cartoon movies of my childhood (from tapes to theater) were musicals; today’s aren’t.
