Yea, the album was a commercials smash -- double platinum and winning a Grammy -- but it was also a personal project for Clapton who had wanted to record with his idol ever since they met at the Cafe au Go Go in New York back in '67. Urban legend is it was that show that emotionally convinced Clapton his move from the Yardbirds earlier, whom he thought were abandoning their blues background for whatever the hell they were after, was the right one.
