Ever wondered what hoverfly sperm look like? πŸͺ°πŸ’‘… Well, me neither! But as you might imagine, they are really tiny: around 15 microns. πŸ”¬ That’s approximately 100 times smaller than a 1mm measurement you’d find on a ruler. πŸ“ Female marmalade hoverflies store sperm (left pic) in spermathecae (right).
As well as my wonderful co-authors: Jennifer Storm, Rylyn Koger, Elleigh Thompson, @rosiewilliams.bsky.social, Mark Dagleish, @simonab.bsky.social, @mariel-td.bsky.social, Nick Davison and Andrew Brownlow.

🚨New Paper🚨 Excited to share my latest @sbohvm.gla.ac.uk PhD research with @strandings.bsky.social which used machine learning to reveal patterns in harbour porpoise pathology, showing how necropsy data can provide population level insights into cetacean health πŸ‘‰ doi.org/10.1002/ece3...
Still buzzing from an inspiring weekend at the Marine Forum @strandings.bsky.social @whalesorg.bsky.social 🌊 So great to meet so many brilliant people – and put faces to names! Huge thanks to everyone who shared their work & time and @ntlmuseumsscot.bsky.social for such a beautiful setting! 🐬
πŸ“’ New paper out! Cetacean strandings in Scotland have risen 125% over the past 30 years. Our study gives the first comprehensive picture of when, where, and which species strand, providing a baseline to guide conservation. πŸ‘‰ www.nature.com/articles/s41... @sbohvm.gla.ac.uk @strandings.bsky.social
