NEW: Given the Trump admin's confusing and inconsistent position on whether the $1.8 billion slush fund has been completely abandoned, Congress must legislate to ensure it cannot move forward. CREW and 17 other groups sent a letter urging Congress to take action immediately.

As if there weren't already enough problems with Trump's $1.8 billion slush fund, now we're learning that a top DOJ official who was responsible for communicating about the fund to Congress planned to ask for money from the fund

We just filed a brief outlining these points in our case challenging the slush fund, and we have a hearing tomorrow where we’ll be arguing for an order that would extend beyond June 12.

Yeah, you could say we're skeptical of the DOJ's claims that it's dropping the $1.8 billion slush fund...
That means that Blanche’s verbal statements at the June 2 hearing saying the fund would move forward were not a legally valid rescission. Neither was the DOJ’s assertion in briefs filed last week enough to rescind the fund, since it did not include all parties to the lawsuit.
The DOJ wants us to take them at their word. But President Trump has signaled that he still wants the fund to go forward. That means we won’t stop pushing until the fund is actually legally shuttered.
If Trump cares so much about "honest voting," why did his DOJ cancel election integrity training sessions for prosecutors and FBI agents and delete a guide on prosecuting election offenses five months before the midterms?

So the terms remain in full force and effect for now, and if the temporary restraining order expires on June 12, at any point the Trump administration could transfer the $1.8 billion to the slush fund and start paying insurrectionists or anyone else they like.

The assistant attorney general for legislative affairs wanted to apply because he had his records subpoenaed when he investigated “Russiagate” as a congressional staffer.
