I think this is a fair point but I'd also say that Gamergate was a major political milestone.
Not so much on its own significance as because (through Milo) Bannon was able to channel a great deal of nihilistic internet troll culture into the proto-MAGA political movement he was building

There are a lot of people who confuse the fact that they *noticed* the curdling of far-right radicalisation during GamerGate with the fact that GG *created* that radicalisation. It was merely an early expression of trends that were well entrained by then.
