Universities are introducing time-tracking systems for academic researchers. I am curious: how exactly do you log hours spent thinking, reading, walking, observing, or slowly writing an argument? Thinking does not run on a time clock.
Small update: the abstract is now included with the article. Much better!
Academia: 'Maternity and parental leave are protected.' Also academia: 'Please explain why you were not in your office during maternity and parental leave. Oh, and we’ve cut your salary. Also, this might count as holiday.' Protection, but make it conditional.
