For context, this is one hundred ninety-two thousand, five-year biomedical research grants. More than five years of complete funding for the entirety of the NIH for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, blindness, epilepsy, infectious diseases, etc… An entire generation of scientists.
The Trump Administration’s racist science policies have achieved some of their goals. The number of Black Principal Investigators has dropped by 10% between 2024 and 2025; while the number of Hispanic PIs has fallen by 7%. For research trainees, the numbers are far worse.
We highlight key examples to explore their functions, regulation, best practices for studying their dynamic conformational ensembles, and our perspective on ways to leverage disordered microproteins as therapeutic targets. Congrats to Tianyu Chen and Kevin Cao in my group for leading the charge!
