A week out from recording our next episode: on rereading #Tolkien — and we’d like to hear your thoughts and experiences! Email us at [email protected] or post a reply to this post if you’d like. Here’s a thread from today on doing a reread if you’d like a handy example.

And of course just a reminder that our own @vandroidhelsing.bsky.social has been doing a detailed LOTR reread this year — about complete! — and posting about it on his Patreon. Consider joining!
few years ago when I reread silmarillion for first time in like at least decade, I was surprised how short it actually is

And the more I dig into it, the more I understand his genius. Like Tolkien, I will eventually pass away with incomplete thoughts and never fully answered questions. And I find that eventuality quite satisfying.
A seemingly uplifting and heroic story in my junior high years becomes more complex and less uplifting (but more interesting) as I grew into adulthood. And as I now age into my senior years I ask questions like: why would a learned man of my age spend so much time on these tales?

Is The Fast and the Furious High Fantasy, the greatest thread in the history of forums,
I first read LOTR before I ever read anyone's comments on LOTR (can recommend). The many complaints about the writing seem silly on reread. The language is not difficult; the descriptions of nature are beautiful and evocative. Merry encountering the Sublime is as core to the story as any magic ring.
The re-reading of the LOTR is such a unique experience, as the more I re-read, and the older I get, I actually have more unanswered questions and more curiosity about the details of the stories.

Reread LOTR for the first time in two decades, with some trepidation (revisiting things you loved as a teenager is never a sure thing). It is, of course, great. Bilbo hits differently these days; hadn't noticed that he literally says he wants to "rest in peace", even if that was always the subtext.

I just re-read Lord of the Rings, and at 58, I rethought my impression of the book. In previous readings, I felt like it was all about decay and decrying change, and that every day that passed took us farther from some not-mythical ideal previous way of living. But it is not so.
