#nzpol Looking into the recent 1GW power hungry data center claim from Jonathan Milne @ newsroom.
Have a look since my other recent posts blew up, I am keeping it simple and verifiable. (Links and annotated images tomorrow as it is laaaate)
Milne and newsroom contact emails have not responded to my inquiry on where their 1GW figure comes from.
Transpower would have to put more 220kv Double Circuit Steel Towers in (and from where?) to meet a theoretical 1GW data center's needs.
Southlanders all need to invest into solar for their homes and businesses to avoid the whims of the power companies. There is more capacity going up elsewhere, for wind and solar, nearby invercargill, but I suspect this largely supplements tiwai and residential to keep those lines cool by layout.
280MW for the data center does put us literally right into the ceiling of what those lines can transmit (see transpower public lines maps/gis/data), but also assumes the hydro can run at peak rates forever, as tiwai is also a constant load.
Will post more tomorrow. Doing some sanity checks on the numbers for the #datagrid #makarewa data center, and the story from Newsroom about it potentially consuming 1GW is currently unverifiable, and the lines from Manapouri Hydro can only support ~860MW safely, 570 already used for Tiwai.
Since people are still finding my posts about this, I have not been able to verify the 1GW figure from information on environment Southland, or public LINZ documents (mentioned in the article)
Newsroom is typically pretty good about facts, so hoping they respond to my email asking for their proof.

Once again I tap the sign that says NZ public authorities really need to adopt and implement the Open Contracting Standard.
