A century ago during the 1920s, America experienced what the historian Merle Curti aptly called a "cult of prosperity," an era that -- just like our own -- conflated "rich and powerful" with "brilliant and wise" I'm a bit fuzzy on the details, but I bet it worked out great for everyone back then.
