Maya ceremonial vessel, 1000-1250CE, Quintana Roo. It is the Descending God or Diving God (sometimes associated with Ah Muu Zen Caab, the god of bees and honey, or with the planet Venus). The god's face emerges from the jaws of a carved bird headdress, which acts as its protective mask or nahual.
