Former NPR climate correspondent working on a business plan to bring high-quality, nonprofit, local journalism to the Philadelphia suburbs.

That team still exists and is focused on climate change now. It’s inspiring to see efforts like this evolve and live on to serve our audience’s information needs. I look forward to finding my next role in journalism’s evolution.
As a former public radio station reporter, I value the connections I’ve made with NPR member stations over the years. A decade ago, I helped create and lead NPR’s environment and energy collaborative team. It brought together NPR journalists with reporters and editors at stations across the country.
As our country celebrates 250 years of independence, more than ever, we need people who are paid to pursue the truth and convey what they learn.
For now, I’m adjusting to this change and exploring a business plan to bring high quality, nonprofit journalism to the Philadelphia suburbs. I’m also keeping an eye on postings for reporting and editing positions. Whichever path I choose next, I remain passionately committed to journalism.
I’m pleased that my final story highlights a goal I’ve had in covering climate change: to put people at the center of this big question of how we’ll respond to this potentially existential issue.
This @akshatrathi.bsky.social Zero episode provides good lessons on interviewing a political bully. Prepare. Don’t do it live on the radio. Use music to indicate when you’re popping back to correct disinformation. Stay calm and sober. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
When I started working on a plan for a local journalism nonprofit, the focus was accountability, accuracy and funding. But this is an emotional enterprise too. Local journalism connects people with good, shared information. There's a hunger for this now. washingtonmonthly.com/2026/06/16/h...
This is my final story as an NPR correspondent. After more than 22 years at the network, I was among those laid off in a reorganization. www.npr.org/2026/06/01/n...
Reporting is about the stories. If you’d like to see some of the work I’m most proud of, it’s on my NPR profile page: www.npr.org/people/41270...
A detail I didn’t know: “The Herald entered the Epstein series for a Pulitzer Prize that year, but it was not a finalist. Alan Dershowitz … who helped broker Epstein’s original deal, wrote a letter to the Pulitzer committee that year, urging them not to honor Brown’s work.” share.inquirer.com/THMiUZ

"At what point does it make sense to ditch a gas car for an EV?" NPR listener Guadalupe Higuera of Phoenix asked this question and worked with Climate Desk reporter Jeff Brady to answer it.
