Yesterday, I learned that the last Black Civil War soldier died at the age of 107 in 1951 (before the Civil Rights Act). He had been enslaved on a plantation in Louisiana and ran away to join the Union. He celebrated his last Decoration Day/Memorial Day in Michigan. His name was Joseph Clovese.
