“Scots discovering tailgating” could be a real Prometheus stealing fire moment
I hasten to add that I was, at one time (1996 to 2005-ish) very into professional wrestling. I was interested in the commodification of performance, performers, and the entire history of the "traveling show" concept. I had this idea that it was the modern vaudeville.
I have probably mentioned this, but as a child I attended a fancy school (on scholarship) with the children of literal titans of industry, and I laid low and paid attention to the peculiar sociology of the generationally wealthy.
Bonus: said woman was probably 30, smoking a More, wearing espadrilles and a brightly-patterned sheath dress I would later learn was clearly a Lilly Pulitzer. GOAT old-money mom.
And let me tell you, that woman's delivery of that line still absolutely haunts me as a kind of complete put-down perfection that I shall never achieve. Anyway, I have been thinking about that line all day, no reason
The history of the artifice of the traveling show is kind of fascinating...the different tiers of the company putting on the shows, working your way up the ladder to big stages/arenas, the parallels of wrestling territories and A/AA/AAA/bigs with baseball and the tiered structure of regional theatre
Thought about writing a book, but upper-level show people were uncooperative, so I decided "it's okay to just think about and talk about stuff" and let that go. But I did sometimes write up dark show recaps for wrestling bloggers. (Small regional show people are awesome to talk with)
When I was around 8, I got invited to a birthday party for one of my classmates that turned into kind of an epic disaster. Someone fell in the pool with the cake. Anyway, I overheard one mother say, with absolute disgust in her voice, "Well. I don't know what you expected from New Money"
I am admittedly not the audience for UFC but I can say that I will never again hear "UFC" and not think of Donald Trump.
