General practice must remain a comprehensive NHS service free at the point of need. I signed EDM 329 as I’m concerned by proposals that could open the door to greater private provision in GP services. This risks undermining one of the founding principles of our NHS & worsening health inequalities.
A message to carers in the City of Durham this Carers Week 🫶🏼
When Parliament can feel distant from people's lives it's so short sighted to consider closing this service when we need to do more to bring democracy to where people are. So I joined with my Co Durham colleagues Liz Twist, Luke Akehurst & Grahame Morris to ask the powers that be to think again.
Casting my mind back to Sunday & the installation of the Right Reverend Rick Simpson as the new Bishop of Durham at Durham Cathedral.
The cathedral is at the heart of our city’s history and civic life & it was great to see so many people marking such an important moment for the Diocese of Durham.
Today, I was pleased to get the chance to ask the Home Secretary direct about the asks in our letter and I'll be sending her a copy, along with the list of signatories, this week.
The Bishop of Durham has an important role in our region not only within the Church but as a voice for our communities & those facing hardship. I wish Bishop Rick every success in his ministry & look forward to working with him & faith communities across Durham on issues that matter to local people.
I had a great time with local Labour members chatting to people at a recent event in Durham, where we gained signatures on an open letter to the Government which essentially asks them to speed up the implementation of the VAWG Strategy.

Glad to speak as co-sponsor of the Secondary Breast Cancer debate earlier. When I think back to my own experiences of breast cancer, I’m always mindful that attending my screening appointment basically saved my life.
I’ll never stop advocating for people to attend health screening appointments! 💗
I’ve sent urgent correspondence to DCMS Ministers requesting urgent attention is given to the dreadful situation faced by Durham Women FC.
What the club has achieved over the years without the backing of a men’s team cannot be understated. It’d be a travesty if they couldn’t continue to operate.
The Parliamentary Outreach service does vital work engaging young people & adults in how Parliament works, how they can take part in the democratic process. In the City of Durham alone, this service has worked with 100s of children & young adults.
