Today in 1996, the Dodgers turn a triple play when Juan Castro catches a pop-up then starts a relay from Delino DeShields to Eric Karros for force outs in the 1st inning of LA’s 6-2 win at Atlanta. It is the 20th triple play in franchise history and 1st in 47 years.
Happy 70th birthday to Lance Parrish. Parrish never played for the Dodgers but appeared in 11 games for AAA Albuquerque before being released in 1993. That said, any former Tiger that was a WS champ, 8-time AS, and GG and SS winner who aspired to be a Dodger deserves a salute.
Happy 69th birthday to Brett Butler. Butler played most of 7 seasons with the Dodgers. He made his only AS appearance in 1991 with LA, the year he led the NL in runs and walks. He also showed incredible toughness when he returned to the game after battling cancer in 1996.
Today in 1951, the Dodgers acquire Andy Pafko, Johnny Schmitz, Wayne Terwilliger, and Rube Walker in a trade with the Cubs. It is believed to be the 1st deal by recently elevated Vice President Buzzie Bavasi, who will run personnel for Brooklyn and LA for the next 17 years.
