👀 New in JEP:HPP: Size and density adaptation are perceptual precursors of numerosity. Aftereffects on perceived numerosity are due to adaptations primarily affecting encodings of density and size. 📖 Full text here: psycnet.apa.org/fulltext/202...
Question for HPP authors: at a recent discussion on peer review at VSS, junior authors expressed worry about bias in the process (not at HPP but generally). Let us know in replies if you are too, and what you believe could help. We want to hear from you!
Tip for junior authors: Calling a debate "ongoing" or a literature "mixed" can be accurate and still fall short. If the evidence tilts with one side using larger samples, larger effects, more specific predictions... say so! Bothsidesism isn't balance; it's uninformative. #cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪
Tip for junior authors: "Filling a gap" is not a theoretical motivation. Before submitting a paper, ask which theory or model predicts a different pattern from yours. If no rival prediction is at stake, you're likely testing an effect, not a theory. #cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪
🧪🧠 An oculomotor universal: When your eyes jump from the end of one line of text to the beginning of the next, the movement is nearly identical whether you're reading in any of 22 languages tested across multiple writing systems — including vertical scripts. doi.org/10.1037/xhp0001419 #cogpsyc
Tip for junior authors: What matters isn't whether a power analysis was run before or after data collection, but whether it depends on the observed effect size. If based on theory, prior studies, or meta-analysis, it remains independent of the data. The problem is circularity, not timing.

Your brain learns when things tend to happen, without you noticing. New in JEP:HPP: people incidentally pick up time–event regularities, and the learning sticks even after the regularity disappears. From attention all the way to action. Open access: doi.org/10.1037/xhp0001407] #cogpsyc #AcademicSky🧪
