What drives the growth of private wealth? Has inequality increased? How does tax policy shape wealth across generations? How do we prevent this? Act upstream. I proposed three avenues: stronger income and family support programs; more low-cost credit options for lower-income groups; and better information for people going through transitions (job loss, birth of a child) about the benefits they're entitled to.
Despite growing debt levels, not everyone struggles to repay, but a significant minority does. About 10% of people with debt experience acute repayment difficulties, and 18% experience them occasionally (Quebec, 2022).
What drives these struggles? Borrowing as a last resort through high-cost #credit products, because it's the only option or because alternatives are unknown.
Parents and caregivers (particularly mothers), people who lost their job or can't work due to illness, and those with chronically low incomes are most affected.
