Yes, the simple act of us existing is enough and is worthy of depiction! But love is powerful and difficult because love is active. My partner holding my hand in the hospital is radical action in a very fragile and increasingly hostile world.

"New Humans: Memories Of The Future" at The New Museum
I have difficulty wrestling with how to paint about love and partnership. I often find myself bored or frustrated with other queer figurative painters in this. So much "gay guy painting" depicts either literal sex acts or states of repose that border on ennui/boredom. Is that all "queer joy" can be?
Did you know that, in the US, its only been legally mandated for 11 years to allow homosexual couples to have equal hospital visitation rights as straight couples? If you were visibly queer and wanted to visit your sick partner in the hospital, they could and would commonly deny you that dignity.
