In 1883, the eruption of Krakatoa was so loud it was heard over 3,000 miles away, roughly the distance from Ireland to Boston. The blast ruptured sailors' eardrums, while the tsunamis it triggered wiped out coastal towns and claimed over 36,000 lives.
