As the little boy sat there amongst the happy crowd, the Smiling Man hissed his annual congratulations.
“Another year gone, Johnny,” he said, invisible to all except the small child, “22 left to go.”
With that, the Smiling Man slipped back into the shadows, until next year.
The high of the weekend has finally dissipated, leaving behind the sloughing tar upon the synapses. Naps and attempts at mental stability abound.
