I see a lot of this in Canadian politics, as well.

there are certain ideas that are really narrative features of American politics more than actual truths. conservatives are patriotic despite their claims that America has degenerated, they're tough on crime despite embracing many criminals, they're free marketeers despite anti-competitive practices
