100% agree and what I want to add is that the starting point is learning to critically and analytically understand WHY you like those cartoons/anime that inspire you what is it putting down that you are picking up, why does it resonate with you, how would you use those elements in your work?

i am all for people going & making their own things. it is hard, vulnerable work but also i think animation people in particular really just need to take a couple years where they read some classic books, watch some old movies, etc. so they're not all drawing from the same tiny well of influences
