Canals vs Bike Paths? How the Dutch balance both seamlessly🚢🚴♂️⚓️What do you do when a bike path meets a historic canal, but you don’t want to build a massive, permanent, high-clearance concrete bridge? The city of Tilburg chose a brilliant, hyper-local solution that allows pedestrians and cyclists to literally move the ferry themselves. In this video, Angela van der Kloof and I encounter a fantastic piece of micro-infrastructure: a hand-cranked, manually operated cable ferry. Watch the entire sequence as we park our tandem bike, open the security gates, and wind the ferry across the harbour to get to the other side. Why is it such a flexible piece of infrastructure? Because it keeps the waterway completely seamless for boat transport. It’s a low-cost, high-utility, unique solution to a major connectivity gap-and as you’ll see mid-video, the boat captains love it too!It proves that smart urban mobility isn’t always about high-tech mega-projects; sometimes, it’s about simple, clever, human-scale engineering.🍿 The countdown is on.
