How do we remember colonial soldiers? In today's featured book review, Richard S. Fogarty reviews Meghan Tinsley’s "Commemorating Muslims in the First World War Centenary: Making Melancholia".
Conversely, "melancholia" refuses to ignore the exploitation inherent in colonialism, destabilising the notion of the nation itself by highlighting both historical and present racism.
Rather than relying on government archives, the study brilliantly utilizes diaries, correspondence and personal narratives to capture the individual experiences of internees and civilians navigating a hostile environment.
