Our paper shows that this emerges from a simple, optimal circuit design found across immune biology. (2/2)
Key findings:
📉 We found a "diminishing twilight"—the later the onset of the end-of-life phase, the shorter it is.
📉 Surprisingly, hazard actually initially drops after end-of-life onset!

Here we investigate the end-of-life phase across flies, mice, and humans. 🕺🪰🐁
We show that these phases are consistent with the dynamics of damage crossing a sublethal threshold before death, explained by the saturating removal model.

Giant thanks to my amazing co-author Glen Pridham & my PI Uri Alon @urialonlab.bsky.social , and a special thank you to Andrew Rutenberg @rutenberg.bsky.social & Luce Breuil for their help and support! 🎉
We hope that this end-of-life paper is just the beginning!

Identify. Attack. Resolve.
The immune system follows a perfect defense program: ignore weak/self signals, attack true threats with force, then shut down to avoid damage. (1/2)

We analyzed changes in physiology relative to menopause using two large scale studies that include millions of lab tests. Rather than align by age, we used statistical inference to align tests to final menstrual period. (1/2)

Recommended listening. I was hosted on the podcast “Gil Hameever” to discuss our latest paper about the sudden physiological changes at menopause. The conversation is in Hebrew.

Revealing the dynamical time course of physiological changes before, during and after menopause. This revealed sudden changes at menopause in nearly all physiological systems. (2/2)

his work is the product of an amazing collaboration with Michael Rera @michaelrera.bsky.social , whose work on the Smurf model triggered this adventure.
We also look forward to further collaboration with Kenneth Rockwood @krockdoc.bsky.social following up on this work.

What happens just before we die? Are the last stages of deterioration driven by different dynamics, or the same processes driving aging all our lives?
Turns out it's the latter, as we show in our new preprint! 🔬
