Zay struck the staff on the ground. The loose rings jingled. "To scare the snakes."
"Stop! You-" The guide froze as glowing eyes loomed above the trees. "You've scared off the snakes. And attracted a dragon!"

In my world there are two long established gods, a spider god and a cactus goddess, who grant Voices, (humans who speak for and to them), magical gifts.
One of my MCs is a Voice of the spider god, Mowe.

Kass frowned at the desert sky through her pluvella's trickling canopy. The water's flow faltered. Kass's frondlike gills tightened. Her breath quickened. She tapped the hollow handle. Gears clicked and the water dome resumed.
Her tail shivered with anxiety.
The pluvella wouldn't last. She couldn't afford to get lost here.
