farewell to the Oxford institution, cornerstone of the scene, Nightshift magazine, the place won't be the same without you
It seems far-fetched I know, but there it was, in Oxford, Sunday night.
HEY if by any chance you're in Oxford, pop by Modern Art Oxford tonight to watch Sian do some violin noodling with @lucyleave.bsky.social - the best band in the world.
But also many moments of kindness, gentleness, whimsy. I was often punching the air, I guess trying to make myself big, triumphant, which is how their music feels like it wants you to be: compelling you to join in. It’s such a generous sound, even when it disturbs and terrifies. youtu.be/E2WvpzaA5y0
And of course it often makes me tremble, moves me to tears, it’s the sublime, it’s Britten’s Sea Interludes, it’s Can’s Halleluwah, it’s Ornette Coleman’s The Shape Of Jazz To Come, it makes you want to dance and shout, it’s full of hope, despair, joy. youtu.be/NBcUdnJC4OI
our show opening for Deerhoof prompted me to write a little review so here goes
we are opening for our heroes tomorrow (Sunday) and we're very excited, you should come and see Deerhoof because it will change your life or your money back* wegottickets.com/f/15277
Deerhoof remain extraordinary, always a revelation. This time I felt like I was watching Debussy free-composing La Mer in front of my ears (with loud drums and feedbacking guitars of course), or maybe The Who turned inside out, trying to rip a hole in the fabric of the universe. youtu.be/gnE7Ygvz3Vs
A belated post to say that flippin eck, @lucyleave.bsky.social were absoutely incredible at the ApTap in Banbury on Friday. Honestly can't recommend their new LP highly enough: lucyleave.bandcamp.com/album/feelin...
