Our new research shows that HPAI increased Northern Gannet mortality by a factor of ~6 and ~4 at two of the world’s largest colonies.
We predict this impact will take almost two decades to recover from.

Scarcely into June, and already more or less completed this year's tit field season in Wytham, marked with the now traditional group photo. Great teamwork once again led by @mcmahok.bsky.social with excellent support from @ellafcole.bsky.social & Sam Croft. Will update with some data summaries soon!
Wishing you both all the very best for the future!
One question about the 2026 Wytham Tit field season is whether the exceptional late May 2026 heatwave will have any effects on growth or survival of nestlings that were in the nest at the time: some thermologger data collected & analysed by @davididiaquez.bsky.social shows how unusual this was
Here's some hard quantitative data on how many km travelled, steps taken, metres climbed and hours spent in the woods fron one of the Wytham tit season team in this, our 80th year of data collection. What a work out!
Here is a lovely thing: a long interview with Chris Perrins by EGI DPhil student @jorgensoraker.bsky.social reflecting on his 70 years at the forefront of avian ecology here at Oxford
Happy to share some Great Tit data from Wytham to test this model!

On the occasion of his 100th Birthday - many happy returns Sir David! - we remember fondly the time Sir David Attenborough came to do some filming of Great Tits in Wytham Woods (and with clip of the resultant film here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGjL...)

First paper, first post 🥳
Many congrats to Liliana Silva and everyone involved! Every behavioural ecologist who’s stared at hours of video footage should check this out 👀
Very proud that the Wytham Tits are part of this!! 🐥🐣

Excited to share the first chapter of my PhD thesis as a preprint! We investigated the genomic consequences of secondary contact between passerines on a remote oceanic island, finding evidence of three-way hybridisation and spooky “ghost introgression” 🏝️🪶🧬

This week has been one of the warmest on record in Oxford. This heatwave has also been recorded by the thermologgers we have in @wythamwoods.bsky.social. The period between 23rd and 28th May has been ~8°C (+2.6 SDs) warmer in 2026 than the same period between 2023 and 2025.
Very proud to share the cool methodological development led by Liliana Silva that greatly facilitates video-based behaviour analyses! 🙌
Tested on sociable weavers, blue and great tits! Great performance and 8x faster than manual analyses! 🤩

That's a wrap on the 2026 Wytham breeding season - the earliest on record! Here are some summary stats from my fieldwork this year 📈🪺🐛🐣 @egioxford.bsky.social

🎦 I’ve had the pleasure of working with Chris Perrins lately. He has been a monumental figure within avian ecology for nearly 70 years. He is also a very nice and pleasant person. So, I sat down and chatted to him about his life in science. Here is the result. ⬇️

After nearly 7 years in Oxford and 10 abroad, it’s time to head back home to Northern Spain 🌊🏔️🌳
Thanks @sheldonbirds.bsky.social for organising the leaving party and for all the good times over the years!
But this isn’t quite goodbye yet! I’ll still be working with Ben on genomics and stuff 🧬🐣🦋
Many of my group round for dinner last night on a beautiful evening to wish @andreaestandia.bsky.social & @nilomr.bsky.social well as they move back to Spain. Both of them did DPhils here then postdocs & brought so much to Oxford & @egioxford.bsky.social in terms of science, culture & friendship
