“I want to stand by my country, but I cannot vote for war.” ~Montana Rep. Jeannette Rankin, 1917, voting against US entry into WW I. In 1941, she also voted against US declaring war on Japan after Pearl Harbor. Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress, was born on this day in 1880. Image: LOC.
