The Global Sea-Ice Concentration Interim Climate Data Record (AMSR), together with the AMSR Climate Data Record it complements will provide a coverage of #Sea-Ice concentration, retrieved from AMSR sensors from 01/06/2002 to present.

Yesterday was a big day for OSI SAF, as we release operationaly our new Sea Ice Index (version 3.0), together with our AMSR2 based Sea Ice Concentration Interim Climate Data Record. The graph you will find on our website are now from the latest version: osi-saf.eumetsat.int/sea-ice-index
In April 2026, the Sea-Ice global extent was 7% below 1991-2020 mean. Since the beginning of records (1978):
- #Arctic, 2rd lowest monthly mean, with 5% less extent (-692,385km²)
- #Antarctic, 11th lowest monthly mean, with 10% less extent (-704,134km²)

On Tuesday 12/05 and Wednesday 13/05 our Steering group has gather in Météo-France #Lannion.
Representatives from @eumetsat.int, @meteofrance.com, @dmidk.bsky.social, @knmi.nl, @met.no and @ifremer.bsky.social came together to discuss the project progress.
The Sea-Ice Index version 3, based on our 4 operationals Climate Data Records and Interim Climate Data Records, will officially provide figures and maps of the Sea Ice extend evolution from 1978 to present.

In May 2026, the #SeaIce global extent was 6.9% below 1991-2020 mean. Since the beginning of records (1978):
- #Arctic, 4th lowest monthly mean, with 4.4% less extent (-575,397km²)
- #Antarctic, 7th lowest monthly mean, with 8.7% less exent (-923,279km²)
