There was a book during Bush II about this called What’s the Matter with Kansas and the question was about why they kept voting against their own economic interests and the answer was they’d been very successfully sold other things to vote for and nothing the Dems have done have grappled with that

Something we really have to grapple with: the Biden administration and Democratic congress worked pretty hard to drive real investment into rural communities, and many of them responded by spitting in the Democrats' face. This isn't an insurmountable problem, but it can't be papered over either
