Sometimes I get caught in thinking about this for other people.
For parted connections I'm always left wondering, what was left unsaid between their words? What more do they known/were they trying to share that they aren't/can't? What is the bit that I will never be able to see?
There is this really twisted social thing where someone tells you something deep, maybe a past traumatic experience and they are feeling like they are all alone with it. Yet every possible response if not finessed right will fail in some way to keep an even connection.
You could:
a) Tell them you have experienced something similar and risk turning the conversation's focus onto you.
b) Ask them questions about the situation to offer understanding. But never quite informing the person to your own knowledge.
c) Provide sympathy through a statement. That's rough bud.
The last 10 years of my life I've delt with more then most have delt with by their 50s. Most statements from me have more behind each word then the face value. I am always in the constant juggle of "What does the person need at this moment?" against the, "I know this deeply"
