In 2 studies (n=423), we manipulated underlying memory precision and found that reducing underlying memory precision increased schema bias of recall responses, as predicted by rational reconstruction theories.
We also found that subjective recall estimates--participants’ confidence that their memory was correct--mediated the effect of the memory precision manipulation on schema bias. As confidence increased, schema bias decreased.
Reducing memory precision in younger adults closely mirrored the effects of aging on schema bias in this task. These findings indicate that schema bias in general and in aging is a rational, compensatory response to imprecise memory.
Our expectations for what is typical (schemas) bias our memories, and this bias gets stronger in aging--but the reasons for this are unclear. We tested the theory that schemas bias memory because schemas are used to reconstruct imprecise memories.
