Irish consumers worse off by at least €1,000 a year due to continued reliance on fossil fuels.

Where's the bike shelter rage now?
It's not a perfect solution, but this response is OTT. For example, they mention "tick-box exercise of disconnected" when this will very much so be connected at both ends to segregated cycle paths. This can be delivered by September. Far better than waiting 2+ years for a permanent project.

Few people will live within walking distance of train stations/stops. Parallel Greenways should be a fundamental part of the design in order to increase the effective radius of the infrastructure. (Could double up as useful service routes)

-- In most cases, the council has installed four stop signs and four shared path signs at each junction. Mayo County Council has said that a nearly €180,000 plan to install new gates and traffic signs along the Great Western Greenway between Westport and Achill has increased in cost to just under €200,000. The spending was revealed in a Freedom of Information request to the council after the local authority had started installing the gates last year, nearly 15 years after the greenway first opened.

Works on the Dublin Port Greenway are starting soon 😀. Meaning that the footpath and cycle lane on East Wall Road will be closed til early 2027 😩. Below is the suggested alternative route for cycling to reach the quays that involves turning down Sherriff St and North Wall Ave. 🚴

Cork Luas plan “risks pushing cycling out of the city centre” — warning issued to avoid serious injuries caused by tram tracks in Dublin

-- Shared design mixing cycling with trams at some points and pedestrians at other should be replaced with segregated cycle paths, group says. If the current draft plans for a Luas route in Cork aren't improved on, authorities risk pushing cycling out of the core of the city, the Cork Cycling Campaign has said in its submission to the current public consultation for the tram route.
-- Protected two-way cycle path to run in the centre of the roadway, a first for Ireland, but council officials note the unusual design has limited application elsewhere in the city. Dublin City Council plans to finally link the cycle paths on the Clontarf route to the quays, with construction due to start in August 2026. It is planned as a quick-build interim project, with artists' impression images (below) showing that the route will mainly use planters similar to those outside the Four Courts.

Two-way cycle path in middle of roadway on Amiens Street to link Clontarf route to quays
This is what happens when engineers and planners who seemingly don’t know what a bike looks like are tasked with delivering cycling infrastructure: a tick-box exercise of disconnected, poor quality cycle paths that create the illusion of progress while never inconveniencing drivers.

Including a greenway alongside the planned extension of Dart to Navan would provide for urban and rural transport needs -- including linking people to their nearest station without needing to drive, especially where there is no or only limited space for park-and-ride car parks. Irish Rail last month published a draft plan for consultation, including a 34-kilometre electrified extension of the branch line towards Navan, which currently stops at M3 Parkway, just a few kilometres north-west of Dublin 15.
