21-year old Richard Rider should be on top of the world but he's not. As Nova he has re-established StarCorp and is more powerful than ever but back on Earth he's a grade-A loser -- and the Shi’ar agrees! To test his mettle, they pit him one-on-one against Gladiator, leader of the Imperial Guard!
Although not featured on the cover, Ambush Bug makes his very first appearance in this issue starring Superman & the New Doom Patrol. He was always meant to be written as a homicidal Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes homage. DC Comics Presents #52, Dec 1982 by Paul Kupperberg, Keith Giffen & Sal Trapani.
Without access to legendary pre-code EC Comics and too young for CREEPY or EERIE books, Alien Worlds and Twisted Tales from Pacific Comics were my first foray into EC-style thills and I really enjoyed them! It also introduced me to great indie artists I didn't see much at DC and MARVEL.
Va-va-voom! I can definitely see what Green Arrow sees in Black Canary 😍 I was seven when I first saw these panels and I still remember them to this day. - art by Mike Nasser & Terry Austin
Happy Birthday to creator Scott McCloud! @scottmccloud.bsky.social ⚡ Creator of one of the most acclaimed indie series of the 80s "ZOT", he is also widely known for a series of graphic novels that delve deep into the art-form known as comic books. "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art" (1993)
I love the character design for Zenith!! For me, it is up there with Steve Rude's Nexus and Matt Wagner's Grendel (Hunter Rose) as best designs of the 1980s.
The wedding of Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel. A true story: Dave Cockrum was so proud of this spread he asked for the original artwork back. Carmine Infantino said NO and Dave quit DC in protest. Afterwards Dave used the designs he had planned for the Legion to create the New X-Men with Len Wein.
Presenting the animated adventures of "Nexus" by Mike Baron and Steve Rude. Old school hand-drawn animation from @steverudethedude.bsky.social The promo video was completely in 2003 and is available on DVD! www.steverude.com/products/nex...
The aliens demand a champion from Earth to pit against their champion in an intergalactic boxing match. Before Muhammad Ali & the non-powered Superman fight before a worldwide TV audience for the right to represent Earth, Ali gives Kal-El some tips to make it a fair fight. - art by Neal Adams
Negative Woman's powers have gone berserk -- her energy being is destroying power plants throughout the east coast and now she's in Metropolis. As Superman and The Doom Patrol try to stop her rampage, a new homicidal psychopath named Ambush Bug decides he wants the negative creature all to himself.
