Efficiency isn't always the most important goal. Reading carefully and knowing how to think critically is valuable on its own--even if that takes longer.

Switching gears: I recently told an acquaintance who works in tech that part of learning how to write is about being a really aggressive reader. His response was basically why should I read a long book when I can learn a thing in an efficient short way, etc
