if you take the pope’s money to write a book, and then that book features a character straight-up named Simpleton who quotes the pope verbatim just so your self-insert character can look smart by correcting him, you cannot be surprised when the pope is mad

As for Galileo, he was found guilty of suspicion of heresy, spent one day in gaol, and the rest of his life living in a palace, and continued to publish heliocentrism around Europe.
