They offer treatments that family practices refuse to offer or lack expertise in. And there are the larger elements of reproductive freedom that these clinics provide. But I'm still dwelling over my initial reaction to Planned Parenthood's closure: There's no other local service I fully trust.
I just got a message that my local Planned Parenthood in Gainesville is shutting down. For the same trauma informed care (and the birth control insert I prefer), I'll have to travel to Jacksonville. I don't think people realize how much of an impact one clinic can have.

Excited that I can now share we are a Literary Arts Fund awardee.
I believe in us, I am grateful for the many hands & minds (editors, authors, designers, funders, board, & friends) that go into nurturing @noemipress.bsky.social, and am honored that we are seen for the labor and vision of our books.
But on a more personal note, @ppfa.org clinics train staff to receive patients who often feel distrustful of institutions. Staff knew how to build trust with me after years of my concerns being dismissed by family clinics. This was the first doctor's office to acknowledge pain I myself dismissed.
I'm wary of doctors. To help me through my first arm insert, staff told me how dozens of teens have no trouble with the same procedure. Imagine what five years without pregnancy scares mean for a teen. That's peace of mind as they graduate high school or college. Those appointments built futures.
I love other writers and how they make it easier to love everything else in my life. Thank you to @therumpus.net for publishing this ode to other poets. It's part of "Beauty Talk" which comes out with @noemipress.bsky.social this October!
