Upstairs on the second floor are stained glass windows and stunning terrazzo floors. In the basement? A narrow hallway with 30 even narrower cells. This is 30 beds unit - almost right now, it’s more than half empty, because Grierson is in transition. #Edmonton #Canada
Over the next few weeks and months, the men will all be moved out of Grierson - transferred to other minimum or medium security institutions, to healing lodges, or in some cases, released. Then, after a few retrofit renos, Grierson will become a facility for 30 female prisoners. #yegdt
Why the shift? The Edmonton Institution for Women is overcrowded, and needs more space for higher risk medium security inmates. So 30 minimum security female inmates will move here. How will it work?
