@dunlin.bsky.social is such a deserving winner! He has been a huge force in the conservation of birds along the Pacific Coast for decades. Not to mention being a great mentor to many, many people. Congrats, Nils!!
For those interested, our drone supplier (thermaldrones.de) is one of the pioneers for drone use for #wader nest search. They have developed a sophisticated software (POI suite) that helps a great deal to filter out the nests from false positives.
I must admit, I had been a drone skeptic for years. Ruff nests are just so hard to find as females built a tent of grass to protect themselves. With the drone we find nests not only faster but also disturb less because fewer walks on the meadows means less flushing of nesting birds.
This season we introduced thermal drones into our fieldwork to find and monitor #ruff and #dunlin nests at #Liminka Bay. It has been a relevation, so far we found twice the number of #ruff nests in a third of the time! For the privileged drone pilots, fieldwork is now done from a comfortable chair!
#Wader breeding season on Baltic coastal meadows at Liminka Bay 🇫🇮. We have found record numbers of #ruff clutches this year. Many any of them contain again one or more blue eggs. Fortunately, current predation rates are very low 🤞 #ornithology #eggblue
Perfect timing for this picture. Ruff lekking is in full swing with their stunning display garnering a lot of attention (not only from ruff females). Unfortunately, ruffs have gone missing from many places across Europe as their breeding habitat, coastal meadows, are vanishing.
Spot the Plover competition time.
Ringed Plover on the nest, this is next to the main track, there are many more isolated small bays in the area which I will not visit. #DoNotDisturb
*To make it easy, Plover is centre of frame.

Incubating Kentish plover female blending perfectly into the environment. Honestly, despite having found hundreds of plover nests in the past, I would have not spotted this one. #birds #camouflage
Zoom on the incubating female. She is very good at pretending to be dead wood.
