Alright, its basically settled fact: Obsession will earn more than Backrooms. Truly absurd what's going on with Obsession.

Backrooms and Obsession are getting discussed together a lot. But Backrooms, while a massive success, is performing like a traditional release. Huge opening weekend, big week 2 drop off. I don't think Backrooms will even catch Obsession despite out grossing it by $64,205,569 opening weekend.

Some films(examples below) slowly grow their box office weekend totals, but it's mostly driven by theaters picking the film up & award nomination buzz. Obsession hardly got added in weeks 2 & 3, with the biggest increase coming in week 4 but still being a small increase.

Its hard to convey just how unprecedented Obsession's box office trajectory is without it sounding like hyperbole. Struggling to find any wide releases that saw increases on opening weekend the way Obsession did and there really isn't. Looks like a genuine unicorn.

This weekend's box office solidifes two huge moments on 2026 film: 1. Obsession's success is incredible and the trajectory was truly historic. You won't find comparable films 2. Mandalorian and Grogu was a massive dud and has been falling down a cliff since its low opening weekend

-Backrooms absolutely killed it this weekend, and it was only picked up by ~80% of theaters. Crazy. -Obsession increased its performance each of its 2nd and 3rd week, which is unheard of. Just printing money at this point -Mandalorian with a brutal week 2 drop off. A genuine bust

Box office weekend 5/29: -Backrooms should beat expectations, $50M+ -Mandalorian's poor opening weekend extended into the week, massive crash coming this weekend -Obsession continues its historic week 2, $20M+ -Breadwinner probably a bust Tuner is the limited release to see, great film.

Interesting week at the box office: -Mando underperforms, might not beat Project Hail Mary on the year. -Obsession beats week 1, sleeper hit on the year. $1 budget, wild stuff -Tuner limited release looks like all sell-outs. That film is great -Sheep Detectives keeps going, awesome film
