“Iran is 10 1/2 hours ahead of Vancouver. So, the Iranians on our campus hold vigil in the night, across an ocean, for the ones they cannot reach, while also expected to be present and functional during the day.”
Neda Maghbouleh writes.
I appreciate @ximenaka.bsky.social 's writing on migrant justice very much. In @thetyee.ca's Weekender this week, an interview with Migrante Alberta director Marco Luciano, who contributed to a new book that reimagines immigration policy in Canada. thetyee.ca/Culture/2026...
In this essay I argue that no one should ride e-scooters except the Lime Scoot Boyz 🍋🟩 thetyee.ca/Analysis/202...
I harbour naive hopes that maybe we're becoming more of an oral society, or redefining the very meaning of literacy or something, but apparently we're actually just losing hundreds of spoken words due to the rot; this is fine 🔥

I can’t fix it from here at UBC. But as a professor, I can show up for my students.
I work next to @michellegamage.bsky.social and @harrisonmooney.bsky.social, which is a dang delight.
Now we all get to hear their voices on Episode 2 of The Tyee Podcast in a timely discussion of summer anxiety and surviving extreme heat. 🔥

One of the joys of my job is getting to work with the wonderful @dorothywoodend.bsky.social. Thanks for this essay about the 2026 Met Gala, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the limits of frou-frou escapism In These Times. @thetyee.ca 👠🦾

Our second episode offers a guide to surviving summer heat from health reporter Michelle Gamage.
I've been following Francisco for a couple months for @thetyee.ca as he has struggled to access health care following his cancer diagnosis. He's lived in Canada for 15 years, but doesn't have status. His family is worried they won't be able to pay for his chemo.

Francisco Barahona, who has lived in Canada for 15 years, is facing nearly $400,000 in medical bills.
Like, this isn't some obscure detail or mass data analysis that AI boosters have been claiming it can help journalists do.
Quoting a public political speech is reporting 101 ... the most basic shit!!
And if AI has made one of Canada's highest profile reporters this lazy ... that's really bad!!
