For decades, researchers have measured #PlasticPollution by counting individual pieces. But those numbers donโt tell the whole story: internal damage caused by plastic (eg. inflammation) is largely invisible
WHERE TO SEE THIS EXHIBIT:
Ulladulla Community University Centre. On display for 30 days starting today. The CUC is open business hours, Monday to Friday, 146 Princes Highway

In our #NewPaper, we developed a minimally invasive test to detect the hidden harm from plastic ingestion in live #seabirds. By looking at proteins in the blood, we identified a biological signature of plastic-associated damage doi.org/10.1016/j.en...
The signature successfully classified plastic ingestion with 96% accuracy & provided critical info on internal damage, including cell breakdown, changes to stomach function, organ damage, and patterns consistent with plastic-induced disease, including #plasticosis
Importantly, this gives us a way to monitor harm in living birds, rather than only understanding the impacts of #plastic after death
Our congrats to @alixdejersey.bsky.social on another brilliant article!
Check out these stunning artworks made from #plastic rope recovered from Australian beaches and woven into #art featuring the bones of #seabirds that washed up on many of the same beaches. This wonderful #ArtScience collaboration is all thanks to Castaway Textiles ๐๐ชข๐ฆ๐
This hand-painted #shearwater was sent to an #AdriftLab team member with a note about #kindness and #gratitude.
A reminder that whatever your talent, it has the greatest impact when used for good. Who knows, your small gesture might just be the kindness that someone desperately needed ๐
โAt the moment, the government is short-changing future generations, and will leave them with a degraded environment, uninsurable homes, and without many of the amazing nature experiences and benefits we have todayโ
