Respectfully, I don't think piling on more testing - basically barriers for entry - is going to fix this. As a math-deficient student my biggest problem was getting teachers who didn't know how to teach math properly or even worse, actively left me behind and ridiculed me for being a slow learner.
More than 1600 of my STEM colleagues in the UC want to fix the math literacy crisis by bringing back the SAT/ACT testing requirement. Aren't professors supposed to teach when students need to learn?

After 3 years in middle and high schools I am sadly not surprised. The preparation disparities are enormous.
Important to note: this is NOT these kids' fault - they are being systematically failed at an institutional level.
