From ExM images we measure the architecture of cilia arrays and find that in addition to the oral apparatus the cell has two domains with distinct packing geometry and cilia density:
Selectively removing cilia from each region, impairs either feeding or swimming, demonstrating the functional specialization of each domain.
This work has additional measurements of cilia beat orientation and cell swimming dynamics. If you like cilia, swimmers and patterns you can't miss this preprint!

These domains differ not only in structure but also in ciliary kinematics. Cilia located anterior to the oral apparatus beat at approximately twice the frequency of those on the rest of the cell. Interestingly, the metachronal wavelength remains the same in both regions.
Excited to share our new preprint exploring how Paramecium achieves diverse flow functions, i.e. feeding and swimming, simultaneously. This work was spearheaded by our ExM expert, PhD student Daphne Laan @daphnelaan.bsky.social : www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Fantastic week of seaside "protisting" at the Microsea summer school in Roscoff. Very keen and inspiring participants. Thanks to the organizers for an amazing first edition. Only downside is that I lost (hopefully only temporarily) my computer to a coffee spill. #protistsonsky
Big congratulations to our winners: Smilla-Maria Koy (1st), Chandrama Ghosh (2nd), and Anthony Rabaté (3rd)! Check out their breath-taking micrographs and the rest of the Top 15 entries in the stunning poster attached. The future of cilia research looks beautiful. 📸 #Cilia2027

Our flagship conference celebrating everything centrosomes and cilia returns this year and it promises to be another exceptional scientific event in the beautiful city of Lausanne, 1–4 September. 👉 Abstract submission+registration deadline 1 June Don’t miss the opportunity to share your research 🤩
💥 🚀 New preprint! 🎉🥳 How do hundreds of organelles organize themselves into near-perfect patterns inside a cell, without a blueprint? We dive deep into how basal bodies (BBs) self-organize in MCCs - and how actin actively tunes their dynamics into order 🍪 🧵👇 (1/17)

It’s done!! Molecular architecture of the ciliary base in mammalian multiciliated cells! A study 13 years in the making 👴, thanks to collab with @stearnslab.bsky.social + @centriolelab.bsky.social & visionary work by @computingcaitie.bsky.social, who integrated native #cryoET with #XLMS & #UExM 🧪🧶🧬🔬
